Peptide Storage Safety: Risks and Best Practices
Résumé
Peptide storage is not just about temperature. This guide covers degradation risks, contamination hazards, and best practices for storing both lyophilized and reconstituted peptides.
Propriétés de la substance
Why peptide storage matters
Peptides are sensitive molecules. Temperature, humidity, light, and microbial contamination can degrade their structure, reducing bioactivity or creating potentially harmful degradation products. Proper storage is a fundamental safety requirement.
Lyophilized form (powder)
Lyophilized peptides are stable long-term when stored at ≤ -20°C in dark, properly sealed conditions. At room temperature, degradation can begin within weeks. Avoid freeze-thaw cycles.
Reconstituted form (solution)
After reconstitution, peptides become susceptible to hydrolysis, oxidation, and microbial growth. Always store at 2–8°C. With bacteriostatic water (BAC water), shelf life is ~4–6 weeks. With sterile water, only 3–7 days.
Contamination risks
Using non-sterile equipment, multiple withdrawals without BAC water, or storage in unsuitable containers can lead to bacterial contamination. Signs of contamination include cloudiness, color change, or visible particles.
Degradation and how to recognize it
Common degradation mechanisms: hydrolysis (peptide bond cleavage), oxidation (methionine, cysteine), deamidation (asparagine), and aggregation. Signs of degradation: reduced efficacy, precipitate, gel formation, altered pH.
Storage best practices
1) Store lyophilized at ≤ -20°C or ideally -80°C. 2) Reconstituted always at 2–8°C. 3) Use BAC water for multi-dose vials. 4) Protect from light — amber vials or foil wrap. 5) Aliquot into single-use doses. 6) Record opening dates. 7) Discard at any sign of contamination.

Foire aux questions (FAQ)
How long does a lyophilized peptide last?
At ≤ -20°C, months to years depending on the peptide. At room temperature, degradation begins within days to weeks.
Can I refreeze a reconstituted peptide?
Freezing reconstituted peptide is not recommended — ice crystals can break peptide bonds. If necessary, use flash-freezing in aliquots.
What's better: BAC water or sterile water?
BAC water (0.9% benzyl alcohol) for multi-dose vials, sterile water for single use. BAC water prevents bacterial growth.
