What is BPC-157? Mechanism of Action & Literature Review

    AllPeptides.eu Editorial Team May 8, 2026 Mis à jour: July 16, 2026 12 min de lecture

    Résumé

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a synthetic pentadecapeptide derived from gastric juice that has been studied extensively for tissue healing, gastrointestinal protection and musculoskeletal recovery. It is one of the most researched peptides worldwide, with hundreds of preclinical studies behind it. Despite that volume of work, it remains investigational at the clinical level.

    What is BPC-157?

BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide (sequence: Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val) isolated from human gastric juice. The Sikiric group at the University of Zagreb has published the majority of the studies on it. Unlike many other research peptides, BPC-157 shows notable stability in aqueous solution and is not readily degraded by peptidases.

Mechanism of action in the literature

The research data suggest that BPC-157 acts through multiple pathways: (1) activation of the FAK-paxillin pathway driving cell migration, (2) modulation of VEGF expression relevant to angiogenesis, (3) interaction with nitric oxide (NO) signalling, and (4) increased expression of collagen and extracellular matrix proteins. In rodent models it shows notable effects in tendon and muscle injury, GI ulceration and neurological damage.

Reported research ranges in the literature

In preclinical studies, reported ranges are typically presented in mcg/kg for rodent models and vary considerably by experimental design. Translating these into human equivalents is scientifically uncertain, and no approved clinical protocols exist. For educational research context, see the BPC-157 hub, the Peptide Calculator and the peptide reconstitution guide.

Oral research context — stability and bioavailability

One of the distinguishing characteristics of BPC-157 is its resilience in the gastrointestinal environment, which explains the research interest in oral formats. Rodent studies show experimental responses across different formats, but this does not translate into guidance for human use.

    Current clinical status

Despite the large number of preclinical studies, BPC-157 has not been approved by the FDA or the EMA for any indication. It remains at investigational status. In 2026 the FDA reclassified certain compounded peptides — see FDA Peptide Reclassification 2026 for educational context. In Greece and Cyprus, BPC-157 is not marketed as an approved medicinal product.

    Foire aux questions (FAQ)

What does BPC stand for in BPC-157?

Body Protection Compound. The name reflects its original discovery as a gastric-juice-derived fragment with protective properties in experimental models.

Has BPC-157 been approved for human use?

No. It remains an investigational compound. There is no BPC-157 medicinal product approved by the FDA or the EMA.

Which research formats appear in the literature?

SC, IP, oral and nasal formats appear in experimental studies. Each format carries its own literature context and none of them constitutes guidance for human use.

    Is BPC-157 safe?

Preclinical studies have not reported significant toxic effects. However, the absence of controlled human clinical trials means the safety profile is not fully characterised.
